Yes! Now I can see Gandhiji around while typing these lines minutes after watching the movie “Lage Raho Munna Bhai” (LRMB). But before you proceed my advice is watch the movie first. Second, for your information, this post is not a review of the movie but just a flattery.
LRMB is said to be a sequel of Munna Bhai MBBS. But it is not a sequel. This movie is a true tribute to Gandhian thoughts and way of living. If one tries to say a movie is good because it spreads messages of Gandhiji, then no words to oppose it. But LRMB is one step ahead because this movie takes Indian cinema one step ahead. LRMB is not a story of an innocent gangster befooling a beloved, it is not a story of few people winning a battle of their rights through non violence and satyagrah, LRMB is a success story of how one can preach Gandhian thoughts to a generation which holds him responsible for many problems of the country today. A generation especially of those who see to Israel or the
USA models of solutions to our problems. A generation which lives in a world where violence and hatred are inherent parts of the environment. In this kind of a world where Gandhi is said to be irrelevant, LRMB is a movie that shows the way. And See how it makes it possible.
One. Through the language. For instance, it uses “Gandhigiri” for Gandhism. Munna Bhai teaches and practices “Gandhigiri” in the movie and thus solves many problems and ultimately wins the heart of the actress. It sends the message in a “feel good” lexicon. “Chemical Locha” for chemical imbalances in mind is another example of how it tries to connect to the audiences.
Two. The kind of problems it deals with. Gandhi solved serious political and social problems through his weapons of truth and non violence. But in this movie Gandhism helps a girl to get married to her lover. It makes a bad son good son by teaching him earn money responsibly by working hard and saving more. This solves problems of neighbors and the problems of corruption in government offices. The problems we face everyday can be solved though non violence and truth it shows. Here, the movie does not show how Gandhi defeated the British or how he successfully launched some social reforms in our society. It only shows how his weapons can be used to make our lives better.
Few more thing about the movie, I liked acting of Arshad Warsi more that that of Munna Bhai or Vidya Balan. Vidya Balan, it seems has become favorite of Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
A nice movie and a must watch.
